Why Haven’t We All Switched to Electric Vehicles Yet?

As an electric car charging company, the future of electric vehicles is incredibly exciting to us. However, there is still a long way to go in terms of getting the positive message about EV’s out there. Over the years, the number of electric vehicles have risen from 4,000 in 2013 to just over 227,000 by the end of August 2019. Whilst this figure seems high, it is a small fraction of the 38.4 million vehicles on the UK roads today.

According to official Government figures, as of 1 October 2019 there were 15,116 public electric car charging stations available in the UK. Of these, 2,495 were fast chargers, demonstrating 312% growth since 2015. However, this is still an average of 23 EV chargers per 100,000 of population in the UK. These figures show that while the pace of change is accelerating, the transition to electric vehicles is still at an incredibly early stage.

Another important element to consider is lack of public awareness around EV charging. Many people within the UK feel quite apprehensive towards making the switch from a traditional vehicle, partially because this is what they have accustomed to. Driving an electric vehicle can pose more benefits than you might have initially considered.

Why considering an electric vehicle is more important than ever

Compared to traditional vehicles, electric vehicles are cheaper to run and much more environmentally friendly. They produce fewer harmful gases that contribute to air pollution and climate change.

Most traditional vehicles produce direct emissions into the environment. Direct emissions are released through a car’s exhaust, which happens as evaporation occurs within the fuel system. These emissions can contain polluting toxins that produce smog, greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide and other harmful toxins that can impact our health. As electric vehicles run on less petrol (in the case of a hybrid) or are powered solely through an EV charger, toxins released into the air is significantly lower.

Over recent months with the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been incredibly interesting to see how less vehicles on the road has contributed to a huge decrease in air pollution. According to The Centre of Research on Energy and Clean Air, “The measures to combat the coronavirus have led to an approximately 40% reduction in average level of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution largely from vehicle emissions on our roads.”

Our theory is the more people making the switch to electric vehicles, the more we will see this figure reduce and remain at a level that is safer for our health and the environment.

The future of EV charging and the benefits it can bring is definitely something to think about when choosing the next vehicle you want to drive.
