For example, a typical electric car like the Nissan Leaf (30kW) takes approximately 4-5 hours to charge from empty using a 7kW charging point.

Factors affecting EV charging speed
Whilst you can obtain an estimated time in which your electric vehicle will take to charge, there are five core factors which you may need to consider:
- The size of vehicle battery: The size of EV batteries vary and are measured in kWh. The larger the capacity of the battery, the longer it will take to charge.
- The current status of the battery: It may seem common sense but charging your battery when it is empty, or half full will affect the time it takes. If the battery is completely empty it will take considerably longer to charge.
- The maximum charging rate of the electric vehicle: It is only possible to charge a battery at the highest rate the vehicle can accept. As with the table above, if your vehicle has a maximum charge rate of 2.7kW, charging using a 7kW EV charging point will not speed up the process.
- The maximum charge rate of the ChargePoint: if for example your car’s maximum charging rate is 7kW, but you are using an EV charging point with a maximum output of 3.7kW it will only charge at 3.7kW.
- The environment: considering the external environment also affects how long it will take to charge a car. Colder temperatures often result in slower, less efficient charging times.
Electric Car Charging at Home
Home charging stations most frequently have a power rating of 3.7kW or 7kW. Electric car chargers with 22kW are often not available at home unless you have three phase power, which are normally only provided to larger buildings such as office blocks and industrial units.
