Based in Gateshead, intu Metrocentre is a shopping centre owned by retail brand intu. The Metrocentre has over 10,000 free parking bays across its four coloured parking areas. The Metrocentre needed to move towards EV charging to provide visitors with the convenience of charging facilities whilst shopping. With public charging stations, electric vehicle drivers gain peace of mind that their cars will be topped up with charge after a few hours of shopping.
Scope of Work
Elmtronics worked with Gareth Owens, Sustainability Manager at intu, across the entirety of the project. To provide the best solution possible, it was important for us to understand their exact requirements and what electric car chargers would work best within the specified areas. Elmtronics went on to then provided a full EV charging infrastructure report, which included smart and reliable equipment at a competitive price. Once the scope of work had been agreed, Elmtronics offered intu Metrocentre a complete public EV charging station installation package, which included:
- Full groundwork
- Electrical installation
- Backoffice management
All installation work was carried out by a qualified electrician to BS7671 (2011) and IET Code of Practice Standards and completed within a few days.
Prior to handover, Elmtronics engineers fully inspected the installation and an electrical certificate was issued. This certified that the units were completely safe and ready for operation.
Upon handover, the customer was fully briefed and trained on the equipment. We also gave training on their software portal, allowing them to create usage reports and access remote support.
The End Result
intu Metrocentre now have three dual public charging stations (six sockets), meaning six electric vehicles could charge at any time. The charging stations are connected to a back office, which allows the user to register and charge their car while they shop.
The electric car chargers are located in the green parking area near Marks and Spencer and within yellow multi story. With more and more of its customers moving towards the switch to electric, intu Metrocentre have made a smart investment in charging infrastructure. They will be continuing to work with us to hopefully provide even more charging stations to the general public.
